The Book of Eli was an intriguing and influential film. Whilst watching it I recognized the significant use of colour throughout the film. In the opening scene (below), the directors, the Hughes brothers have used a set colour scheme. I felt that the colour scheme made the mise en scene look dead and empty, it gave the forest a sickly look connoting that this wasn't normal. Leading the audience into finding out what has happened and why is the earth like the way it is. They used colour schemes throughout the film to give a depressing tone. This image of Eli walking through the wastelands is very bright yet uses a blend of different greys, making the whole image similar in colour. Grey being a depressive tone, setting the wasteland atmosphere. This tone was used throughout, with the addition of lighter browns. The directors have lowered the contrast to drain most of the colour out of the image, indicating death and loneliness.
The use of colour in this film is what I would like to take away and think about more in our project. Our film should have a tone or motif that sets the tone in the film.
